下列對話，您能看得懂嗎？
John : Hey, dude ! Let's go for a nosh-up !
George : I say we get some booze and then boogie !
John : You must be bonkers ! We need dough for that !
George : Bugger it !
逗留當地數年 才稍懂俚語
看不懂不必介意，這段對話內包含很多俚語 (slang)，很多人也會丈八金剛，摸不�騔Y腦！一般學習正統英語的人，課程很少觸及俚語，在學校內老師大抵也不會教，所以不熟悉這些字彙，非您之錯也。
想起當年初到英倫，以為自己一口流利英語，卻想不到完全溝通崩潰，當時有點懷疑那群洋人是否在說英語？原來必須於當地逗留數年，才能稍懂怎樣用俚語溝通。
話說回來，John 和 George 在說甚麼呢？
John : 喂，老友！一塊兒去吃個痛快，好嗎？
George : 我說呢，不如去喝酒跳舞！
John : 您瘋了！咱們那來那麼多錢？
George : 真沒趣兒！
A bun in the oven:懷了孕
下列對話，更為有趣，您能猜猜她們在說啥？
Mary : Jane's got a bun in the oven .
Susan : C'mon, do me a lemon ! Are you sure she's up the spout ?
Mary : It's a dead cert .
Susan : What say her old man and lady ?
Mary : She don't give a monkey's what they say !
原來 “got a bun in the oven” 和 “up the spout ” 都是指懷了孕！聯想力怎樣豐富也猜不到吧？“ do me a lemon ” 並非叫人給您一個檸檬，這句俚語是說「您甭開玩笑」，正統英語是 “you must be joking ”；“It's a dead cert.” 意指「非常肯定」，不是「死的證書」； “old man and lady”指「父母」； “not give a monkey's” 也和猴子無關，意思是「絕不理會」。

看起來風馬牛不相及的東西，俚語就偏偏不跟您談邏輯！不信再看看下列對話：
