看過Austin Powers的系列電影嗎？每次他做錯事，身邊的人不會說：「Don't do this!」或「Don't do that again!」，而是說「Oh, behave!」。一句話就反映了中西文化不同。外國人在評價其他人時大多會考慮到別人的感受，不會直斥其不是，只會溫和地提示你：「這樣會比較恰當。」
String me along你呃人！
今次要介紹的是「說人不是」的潮語。由於外國人不太習慣直斥不對的地方，所以他們會巧妙地運用潮語去表達對那人的不滿。例如，「drive someone up a wall」，字面意思只是「令某人在牆上行」。但其暗含「annoy someone greatly」（非常令人煩厭）之意。此外，我們常說「賣他人入火海」，原來他們也有「sell someone down the river」，不過意思是「betray someone」（背叛某人）。
想說某人對你不誠實？不用直接地說的，可用「string me along」去說那人deceive（欺騙）你。
例如：Jane had high hopes of marrying James. When he ran off with another woman, she realised that he was just stringing her along.
Jane對和James結婚抱有很高的期望。當他和另一個女人逃走時，她才發現原來James只是欺騙她。
有聽過Radiohead的名作《high and dry》嗎？中段的chorus唱的「Don't leave me high, don't leave me high and dry」，其實是指「Don't abandon me!」（不要撇下我）。難怪Radiohead當年就憑這首歌冧盡不少粉絲。
Sell someone short小看他人
做人千萬不要「sell someone short」！「Sell someone short」就是「underestimate someone」的意思。如果你低估別人，看輕別人，人們可能會說你「sell someone short」呢！此外，也不要「give people a snow job」。即「沒誠意的講話」。講到天花龍鳳，但沒有誠意就乜都是假的。除「string someone along」作「欺騙某人」外，原來「feed someone a line」也有同樣意思。
最後，是否聽說過「spill the beans」？「Spill the beans」當然不是「豆子灑滿地」這麼簡單。原來「spill the beans」作「reveal a secret」（揭露一個秘密）。你可以這樣用「spill a beans」：
Harry was planing to take Kate on a Caribbean cruise but John spilled the beans.
