農曆新年又快到了。明年是馬年，大家都希望馬年繁榮，有新景象，一如駿馬奔騰，充滿活力。
馬匹奔跑的時候有不同姿態，有快有慢。這期筆者談談幾個動詞，描述馬匹奔跑時的各種形態。首先，馬是善跑的動物，可以跑得很快。馬匹疾走時，四蹄離地騰飛。描述這個動作，英文可以用動詞：gallop。例如：
The horse got frightened and galloped down the hill.
那匹馬受了驚，奔馳下山。
Many people enjoy watching horses gallop in horse racing.
很多人都愛看到馬兒在賽馬時疾飛奔跑。
這個動詞亦不時用來描繪人的動作，既可以解作策馬飛奔，也可以形容動作敏捷迅速，有如奔跑。例如：
It should be fun and exciting galloping in the wild.
在原野策馬飛奔應該是很有趣、很刺激的事。
Upon hearing the news, he galloped down the stairs and left in a rush.
聽到這個消息後，他飛奔下樓梯，匆匆離開。
「canter」放慢馬步
如果馬兒跑的時候放慢腳步，不是飛奔，可以用「canter」形容。這動詞是慢跑，不會四蹄同時離地，跑得較為舒適。與「gallop」一樣，這個動詞也可以用來形容人騎着馬，但不是策馬飛奔，而是慢跑。
The horses cantered around in circles.
那些馬匹在繞圈慢跑。
It was a sunny day and she was cantering her horse round the field.
那是陽光普照的一天，她騎在馬背上在草地繞圈慢跑。
如果「馬步」再放慢一點，變成踱步時，則有另一個動詞可用「trot」。這是指小步操，形態如踱步，前後腳較有節奏地踏步。這個動詞自然也可以指人騎着馬踱步。
The horses trotted in the farm in a relaxing way.
那些馬兒在農場內輕鬆地踱步。
He trotted his horse up the hill, enjoying the scenery on the way.
他騎着馬匹踱步上山，沿途欣賞風景。
「trot」態如踱步
此外，「trot」 亦可以形容人作出類似的動作，即是急步走路，既不是跑，也不是輕鬆漫步。
After lunch, the students trotted towards the classroom. It was about time for a lecture.
午飯後，學生們急步走向課室，因為講課的時候快到了。
After the meeting, she trotted back to her office to make a phone call.
散會後，她急步走回辦公室打電話。
由此可見，不同的動作形態有不同的動詞可以表達。筆者見到商場有「gallop into the year of the horse」（騰進馬年）的賀詞，迎接新年。gallop 是馬匹奔騰的動作，令人覺得是活潑而躍動地進入馬年。■Lina CHU
