Group discussion 中要取得好成績，除了對別人的提問要有恰當的反應外，同學亦應嘗試對整個group discussion 作出貢獻(contribution)。要作出contribution，同學首先應清楚了解group discussion 中的不同角色。一個有效的小組可包括以下的角色：
1. The Leader or the chair︰Leader 通常都會在討論中第一位發言作introduction，目的是define討論的方向。理想地，leader亦應作總結(summary)，summarise 之前討論過的內容。在考試中，由於想避免任何一位同學dominate the discussion，很多時候introduction和summary會分別由兩位同學來做。
2. The gatekeeper︰Gatekeeper 的角色主要涉及控制討論的內容。如果有任何的digression(離題)，gatekeeper應提出或阻止。另外，如遇到任何的dominator，gatekeeper亦應interrupt。因此，gatekeeper 的角色亦非常重要。
3. The facilitator or encourager︰Facilitator/encourager主要是鼓勵一些較文靜的同學發言。討論要求同學合作，任何一位同學不發言都會影響全組人的分數。
4. The time-keeper︰顧名思議，time keeper的角色主要提醒同學尚餘的討論時間，促使同學可更有效利用討論的時間。
由此可見，同學即使不能夠做leader，亦有其他的角色可做。因此不需要太在意能不能夠成為team中的leader。更重要的是同學應考慮如何正面contribute to the team。
要奪取好成績，除了在小組討論中應嘗試去演繹以上的角色外，更重要就是一定要講得清楚（speak audibly）。如果考官聽不到你的意見，他們只會覺得考生做得不夠好。另外，優秀的同學常犯的毛病往往是過分進取（overly aggressive）。考生不妨放下競爭的心態，因為合作才是oral task的重點。■Dr. A. Chan
