上期提及在DSE考試中有機會遇上business writings。Business writings與academic writings除了在用字上會不同，前者更強調文章的組織（organization）及對應的格式（format）。今日先簡述不同文章的組織。簡單來說，組織主要分兩類：direct和indirect patterns.
Q：何謂direct與 indirect patterns？
Direct pattern 是指在文章的起首（opening/introduction）先交代了文章的目的 ，例如在求職信中首先說明來信目的。Indirect pattern 剛好相反，在起首先解釋事件的背境及其他情況，在body（主文）中才談及來信的目的。
Q：何時應用direct或indirect patterns?
若你要傳遞的信息是正面（positive）或中立（neutral）的，應選用direct pattern；若你想傳遞的信息為負面（negative），又或者你估計讀者未必會接納你的意見時，應選用indirect pattern。
Q：Direct 與 indirect patterns有什麼好處?
對於direct pattern，最明顯的好處莫過於直接易明，因為讀者一開始就明白信件的目的，減少發生誤會的可能；亦因為這個原因，大部分信件都會選用direct pattern。至於indirect pattern，其好處莫過於有充分的時間給作者解釋清楚整件事情，也可減低負面事情對讀者的影響。因此能掌握這兩種patterns有助同學處理不同種類的business writings。
Q：我們應如何運用direct與indirect patterns?
以下作一個比較，兩段落中同樣邀請一位讀者來作講座，但演繹方法則是完全不同：
Direct Pattern
Would you be willing to speak to our students on time management on Apr 19?
解釋：Direct pattern is used when you expect the reader will agree to help you without much persuasion.
Indirect Pattern
Your new book, 12 Habits of Highly Efficient People, is no doubt a big hit.
解釋：Indirect pattern should be used when you expect the reader may not want to help you so you must persuade him/her by explaining the background first.
Practice
Check the appropriate pattern for the following scenarios.
1. An appeal for a monthly donation to Save the Children, a charity.
2. A letter to ask companies to start recruiting ex-offenders.
3. A request for information about a make-up class.
