■「放在天秤上」即一切仍是未知數。網上圖片近年，世界局勢意外頻生，英國脫歐、特朗普當選美國總統，全都出人意表。很多人覺得未來不可預料，前途極不明朗，有人會說the future is in the balance，意思就是未來猶如放在天秤上，不明傾向，沒有定論。
Hang in the balance 未知好壞
英文balance是用來量度重量的天秤。若是說某些情況或事件放在天秤上（be in the balance或hang in the balance），即是說事情尚未有定論，一切仍然是未知數，難以肯定，不知將有什麼會發生，不知是好是壞：
The fate of the village is in the balance although many people have worked hard to preserve it.
雖然很多人很努力去保留它，那條村的存廢依然未明。
After the accident, he had to undergo several operations on his brain and his life hung in the balance.
發生意外後，他需要進行多次腦部手術，生死繫於一線。
Because of the scandal, her political career is now hanging in the balance.
由於鬧出醜聞，她的政治生涯吉凶難料。
The project is in the balance at the moment because we are still waiting for the final decision of the committee.
這項計劃目前懸而未決，因為我們尚在等待委員會的最終決定。
Tip the balance 傾向某方
明白了hang in the balance的意思，就不難理解tip the balance。動詞tip是使到東西傾斜，tip the balance即是令到天秤向其中一方傾斜。此語的意思是施加影響力，令到某些結果或情形出現。由此就有tip the balance in favour of，即是發揮影響力令事態有利於某一方。另一句是tip the balance against，即發揮影響力令事態不利於某一方：
What are the factors that will tip the balance in their decision?
有哪些因素可以影響他們的決定？
The candidates have similar qualifications but his performance in the interview tips the balance in favour of him.
各個應徵者資歷相若，但他在見工時的表現令他的形勢佔優。
Her public speech last week tipped the balance against her party in the election.
她上星期的公開演說令她的政黨在選舉中失利。
