Strengthen exchange and cooperation between elite and ordinary schools

¡@Results of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination(HKALE) were released at the end of last month and the Hang Seng School of Commerce once again became the biggest winner as all four top performers who got six A grades had come from this single school. The school's excellent performance in the HKALE reinforces the halo effect of elite schools. However, what is needed now is more emphasis to be put on how ordinary schools can improve their quality of teaching and benefit more students so that polarization of secondary education in Hong Kong can be prevented.

¡@The Hang Seng School of Commerce has been achieving good results in the HKALE in recent years and has become a Òsuper producer* of HKALE top performers. Buoyed by the elite effect, the school attracts the best students and teachers in the territory, creating a virtuous circle in which both the students and the school are benefited. This also is the reason that accounts for the fact that HKALE top performers normally come from traditional elite schools. As a result of this, these elite schools receive high regard from the community and students are in a race for a seat.

¡@However, elite schools are after all a product of elite education. They constitute only a small part of the school system in Hong Kong and just a very small number of students are able to get a place in these schools. After the release of HKALE results, public attention focused only on the high achievers from the elite schools. As far as the elite schools are concerned, this is merely like icing on the cake. In fact, society should place more emphasis on the majority ordinary schools. Ordinary schools, constituting the main part of the education system in Hong Kong, have a strong bearing on the future of the thousands of students in Hong Kong and that of the society as a whole. Only when the ordinary schools can upgrade their teaching standards, narrow the gap from elite schools and nurture more students qualified for university education can the vast majority of students truly benefit. Therefore, the authorities in charge of education should consider allocating more resources to give appropriate support and assistance to ordinary schools. On the other hand, the elite schools should have more exchanges and cooperation with ordinary schools and share their success experience in running schools. With these initiatives, the overall standard of education in Hong Kong can be improved. For the sake of students and society at large, this is the right responsible approach.¡@¡½Translation by ¶}©ú chi.ming818@gmail.com
