In the first two months of the year, 28 ginseng and dried seafood shops in Hong Kong were found selling cattle tendons for deer tendons and approximately 187 kilograms of fake deer tendons was seized. The shops were convicted by the court and fined a sum of HK$343,500. Hong Kong is a shoppers' paradise. It attracts numerous tourists from around the world, in particular those from the mainland, because local merchants always place high emphasis on their reputation and provide tourists with genuine products in reasonable prices. Doing business honestly is the lifeblood of Hong Kong's prosperity. Merchants who cheat customers and profiteer by selling substandard goods disguised as high quality products or offering counterfeit products faked as genuine ones are practically destroying the foundation of the business sector and hurting the overall interests of Hong Kong. On the one hand, the authorities have to strengthen the crackdown on selling fake products; and on the other hand the retail industry should advocate self-discipline, encourage reporting of malpractice and curb the spreading of the wrongful deeds of cheating customers.
Hong Kong is renowned as a shoppers' paradise. In recent years, tourists from the mainland continuously flock to Hong Kong on shopping sprees. Unfortunately, some black sheep of the retail industry have tried to make quick money and profiteer by cheating customers with various sinful acts like selling cattle tendons for deer tendons or conch slices for abalone slices, or deceiving customers by pricing their products per tael instead of per catty. The merchants cause serious damage to the reputation of Hong Kong over and over again, tainting the territory's golden brand as the shoppers' paradise.
It is worth noting that frauds happening in ginseng and dried seafood shops are rising and most of the victims are tourists from the mainland. Mainland tourists are now important contributors to the retailing market in Hong Kong. If the malpractice of selling fake products becomes the norm, the unavoidable consequence will be bad money driving out good. Tourists from the mainland will lose confidence shopping in Hong Kong, and this is in nature as harmful as cutting off sources of income of Hong Kong.
