1997年香港回歸祖國，今年踏入第十五年，又到新一屆特首選舉的時候。早前有關政治人物私生活的新聞鬧得滿城風雨（to cook up a storm），未知讀者有否在茶餘飯後談論他們品格的同時，想想香港社會將如何發展？先有特首候選人唐英年僭建事件，後有特首曾蔭權接受款待風波，為保政治人物的專業操守及形象，他們均極之忙碌（up to the ears in work）地為個人行為作連串解釋。然而，人算不如天算（the best laid plans），因為現今資訊發達，他們說出部分事實而非事實之全部，被揭發以後才承認，如斯舉動最終令小市民對政府失去信心（take the wind out of one's sails）。雖然哲人蘇格拉底教曉筆者「愈辯愈明」的道理，但就政治人物個人操守問題，還是直截了當，在眾人反駁以前告知大眾比較值得欣賞。
不知大家對這些事件看法如何（what's your take on that）？政治人物的私生活和社會地位能否兩者兼得？剛才筆者的一番「偉論」，除了希望能夠喚醒大眾對社會的關心，亦希望給大家認識多一點點idioms。剛才提到的片語或短句，將於下文作詳細解說：
1.You can't have your cake and eat it（魚與熊掌，不能兩者兼得）
說明：蛋糕吃掉了便不可能使蛋糕還在自己手中，因此這句子比喻「事難兩全」。
例句：How can you compare Hong Kong's social welfare with that of Canada's? Don't forget that you are enjoying one of the lowest taxes in the world. You cannot have your cake and eat it!（他怎能把香港的福利制度和加拿大的比較？不要忘記，香港的稅率這麼低。低稅率和高福利，兩者是不能兼得的！）
2.To cook up a storm（滿城風雨）
說明：「to cook up」指「烹飪」，在此語中引申為「編造」之意。
例句：This magazine is not worth reading because it is always cooking up storms about film stars' gossips.（這雜誌不值一看，因為它只懂搬弄明星的是非，弄到滿城風雨。）
3.Up to the ears in work（極之忙碌）
說明：這句指工作堆積如山，高到碰到你的耳朵，忙碌的程度可想而知。
例句：True, the manager earns a very handsome salary but he is always up to the ears in work.（誠然，那經理的收入可觀，但他的工作極之忙碌辛苦。）
4.Take the wind out of one's sails（令人失去信心）
說明：以前船隻在海上張帆乘風而行，如果給其他船隻搶佔了風路，就無法繼績航行，比喻「使人頓時失去了信心」。
例句：Tony had spent the whole night tossing and turning on his bed before he finally plucked up his courage to ask Mary out. But she rejected him at once. This really took the wind out of his sails.（Tony徹夜在宝上輾轉反側，最後他終於鼓起勇氣邀請Mary外出。不過她卻斷然拒絕了他，使他的信心盡失。）
5.What's your take on that？（你對這些事件看法如何？）
說明：Take在這裡用作名詞，解作「意見」、「看法」，所以全句指詢問某人對某事的看法。
例句：After a long meeting with our boss, he got a better understanding of each of our opinion on the issue, but none of us knew his take on it!（經過漫長的會議後，上司對我們在這件事上的意見瞭如指掌，但我們對他的想法卻一無所知！）
6.The best laid plans（人算不如天算）
說明：諺語中mice和men是平等的，顯示人和老鼠沒有甚麼分別，都是天地間的生物，都是那麼渺小無助，不能控制所發生的種種事情。
例句：Rex eagerly and carefully planned for his wedding. He had worked very hard to save up enough money to buy a flat. But just one day before his wedding day, he was killed in a traffic accident. The best laid plans of mice and men have failed.（幾經努力Rex才有足夠的錢買樓結婚，但就在婚禮舉行的前一日，他竟然在交通意外中喪生。人算不如天算！）
