根據考評局資料，有關subject-verb agreement的錯誤在英文寫作考試中相當常見。Subject-verb agreement即單數主語須配單數動詞，複數主語須配複數動詞（主謂一致）。例如：
單數：One book is on the shelf.
複數：Three books are on the shelf.
搭配單複數動詞 在於確定句中主語
很多情況卻沒有這麼簡單。譬如說，a list of participants 和a number of students應該配單數動詞還是複數動詞？選擇的關鍵在於哪個字是主語。
大部分情況下，主語是of前面的名詞，例如：
The list of participants (參加者名單) has been published.
The colours of the rainbow (彩虹的顏色) are pretty.
The number of students in this class (這班學生的數目) is 30.
上述句子中，of participants/ of the rainbow/ of students in this class是修飾語，the list/the colours/ the number才是決定動詞形式的主語。
不過，如果of前面的字詞表示數量，除了one of, each of, every one of和none of這類表示「其中一個」、「每一」或「沒有」的用語必須配單數動詞外，其他情況就要看of後面的字是單數還是複數。例如：
A number of students (不少學生) were absent yesterday.
(注意the number of和 a number of 的分別。)
Two-thirds of the pie (三分之二個餡餅) has been eaten.
具體情況具體定 容器量詞等視為主語
雖然a box of eggs (一盒雞蛋)和two bottles of milk (兩瓶牛奶) 的box和bottles發揮量詞的作用，但是英語文法將這類容器量詞視為主語，如：
A box of eggs costs fifteen dollars.
There are two bottles of milk in the refrigerator.
還有其他特殊情況，包括：
主語表示一段時間、一段距離或一個數額，配單數動詞。如：
Five thousand miles is a very long distance.
主語是集體動詞，雖然不加-s，但配複數動詞。如：
