香港政府每年都資助多種文藝活動，筆者日前便去了其中一個免費講座，主辦單位請來鋼琴家兼心理醫生Dr. Kogan（高根醫生），探討音樂家貝多芬的內心世界及其音樂內涵。通過這場講座，筆者加深了對貝多芬音樂的認識。提到貝多芬，大家都知道他是音樂界極為重要的人物，非常有名，極具影響力。可以說：
On the scene of music, Beethoven is a name to conjure with.
在音樂界，貝多芬是赫赫有名的人物。
這個短語「a name to conjure with」用來指一個非常重要的名字。當然，其意義是正面的，表示每提起這個名字，都會令人想起美好的事物，通常用來形容某個圈子中一個很有名氣、極有影響力、甚至有魔力的人物，有時亦可以形容機構或地方。
When we talk about the fight for equality, Martin Luther King is still a name to conjure with.
每當我們說到為平等而奮鬥，就會想起鼎鼎大名的馬丁路德金。
His name may not be a name to conjure with in the football field now but I am sure it will be in the future.
他今天未必是足球圈中一個顯赫的人物，不過我肯定他將來必定聲名鵲起。
「conjure up」變戲法 威名遠播
短語中的「conjure」或「conjure up」，其實就與魔法有關，意思是變戲法，令某些東西變魔術般出現或消失。故此，如果形容令某些事物出人意表地、神奇地出現，令人莫名其妙，也可以用「conjure」。
The audience was amazed when the magician conjured a rabbit out of his hat.
魔術師從帽子變出一隻兔子時，觀眾驚嘆不已。
We can't conjure up a harmonious atmosphere when there are so many conflicts in society.
社會上有如此多矛盾，我們不能像變魔術一樣創造一個和諧氣氛。
He is able to conjure success and make profits even under very bad economic environments.
即使在極度惡劣的經濟環境中，他仍然可以創造成功，製造利潤。
從「conjure」引申而來的「a name to conjure with」，就是指這名字有魔力一般的重要性，威名遠播。
有人會覺得香港文化發展不夠蓬勃，但我們希望政府可加強資助有水平的演出或講座，令香港也可以成為文化界一個重要的名字。我們也可以驕傲地說：
'Hong Kong is a name to conjure with. It is a place for wonderful cultural events.'
