9月又到了，新一個學期開始。大家都要準備迎接新學年，訂立新目標。要實行新計劃，當然就要做足準備工夫。英文所謂的make ready 、get set 就是這意思，ready 和 set 都是形容詞，指準備好了，就緒。例如：
Put away the old stuff and tidy up the place. We have to make ready for the new term.
收起那些舊東西，收拾好地方。我們要為新學期做好準備。
Having worked in another country for over a year, he is making ready for his journey home.
在外國工作一年多以後，他正準備返家的旅程。
Have you got set for your new appointment?
你準備好了上任新職位嗎？
出征前清甲板喻做好預備
此外，另一個慣用語clear the decks（清理甲板）其實亦有相似意思。短語中的 decks 是船隻上層的甲板部分，可以供人行走。打仗的時候，士兵會在戰船出征前先把甲板清理，預備好船隻出戰。所以，clear the decks引申開來，是為某些計劃、活動作準備，清理不必要的東西，做好事前預備工夫。
The students have cleared the decks and got ready for the new semester.
學生們已經一切準備就緒，迎接新的學期。
Let's clear the decks and then start cooking dinner for the Mid-autumn Festival.
讓我們先清理一下，然後開始烹調中秋節晚餐。
