對於英國經典小說《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》 （作者：路易斯．卡羅），相信不論是兒童還是成人也不會感到陌生。這部兒童文學除了因為有趣的角色和奇幻的情節而聞名於世外，角色對話中牽涉的語言運用 （language use）更為讀者津津樂道，我們不妨重溫書中一些有趣的句子，藉此學習一下英語。
在《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》續集《鏡中奇緣》的第七章《獅子和獨角獸》，其中說到愛麗絲碰上白國王（White King）的士兵和戰馬之後，在叢林中與白國王的一段對話：
The King said, "...And I haven't sent the two Messengers either. They've both gone to the town. Just look along the road, and tell me if you can see either of them."
"I see nobody on the road," said Alice.
"I only wish I had such eyes," the King remarked in a fretful tone. "To be able to see Nobody! And at that distance too!..."
這着實是一段有趣的對話！但「趣味」在哪裡？答案就在nobody這個字。
Nobody在文法上屬於不定代名詞 （indefinite pronoun）。不定代名詞是代名詞（pronoun）的一種，用於代指某人或某物，跟確定代名詞 （definite pronoun，如he、she、it等）不同，不定代名詞並沒有明確的指涉 （reference）。
上面對話中的趣味在於，當愛麗絲回答國王「I see nobody on the road」，正常人都會把她的意思理解為「我在路上沒有見到任何人」，國王卻把nobody理解為一個普通名詞（common noun，指涉一般類（class）的名詞，例如table、building、sandwich）或專有名詞（proper noun，指涉特定對象的專有名稱，例如Peter和Hong Kong），即把句子理解成「我在路上見到『沒有人』」，還說他真希望能像愛麗絲一樣能見到「沒有人」！換句話說，作者在這裡巧妙地運用了句法和語意歧義：在句法上來說，「I saw nobody on the road」與「I saw Daniel on the road」平衡，故當我們拋開語意時，「自然」可以「合理」地推論 nobody 跟 Daniel 用法一樣，將nobody當作普通名詞或專有名詞使用。我想，大概只有「沒有人」會同意白國王這樣的理解方式 （Nobody will agree with White King）！
其實，nobody在用法上也有不少值得注意的地方：
1. Nobody不能用於否定句或疑問句。
例： Nobody cannot come. （X）
Nobody can come.（ ）
沒有任何人能來。
例： Is nobody home?（X）
Is anybody home?（ ）
有沒有任何人在家？
2. 跟大部分不定代名詞一樣，nobody必須配合單數動詞使用。
例：Nobody agree with the plan. Why do you go against us?（X）
Nobody agrees with the plan. Why do you go against us? （ ）
沒有人同意這個方案，你為什麼還是要跟我們作對呢？
3.在特定情況下，可以把nobody充當普通名詞使用。
例： I have put our relationship behind. You are nobody to me now.
我已經把我們從前的事忘記了，現在你對我來說毫不重要。
