Fighting hard to stop

In 1907, the Revolutionary Party, led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, launched a number of uprisings, striking a hard blow against the Qing government. The Qing court, therefore, strengthened its defences, but the public were already aware that it was impossible for the Qing government to turn back the tide.

The cartoon shows a group of government officials working together to hold a broken water jar together using ropes, illustrating how dysfunctional the Qing government had become, and how its actions and reactions made it impossible to withstand the powerful tide of revolution.

This cartoon was first published in the Tokyo Pictorial in Japan, and was reprinted in Pictorial of Current Events in 1908.
