ENG 卷一閱讀理解的另一常見問題是有關事實、意見和態度的推論性問題(inference questions on facts, opinions and attitude)。要解答這類問題需要策略(strategy)。第一步,identify the subject of the question(辨認問題的主題)。第二步,locate keywords and phrases(找出重要字眼)。第三步,用內容(context)、邏輯(logic)和common sense,甚至題目的重要字眼中的connotative meaning(涵義)去找答案。
大家可試用以上的策略解答以下問題:
Cyber bullying(網絡欺凌)is a surging(有上升趨向的)problem, with punishments being inefficient.
Question:How does the author feel about cyber bullying?
第一步,這問題的subject是關於author's feelings about cyber bullying(作者對網絡欺凌的感覺)。
第二步,第一個重要字眼是「surging problem」(有上升趨勢的問題),告訴我們網絡欺凌是一個難以解決的嚴重問題。「publishments」和「ineffective」也是內容中的重要字眼。這兩個生字讓我們知道欺凌者明知有懲罰也不怕。
第三步,從keywords的涵義可知作者感到網絡欺凌是個嚴重的問題,且沒有有效地去解決。可以這樣回答:The authors feels that cyber bullying is a serious problem that is not coped with efficiently.
My daughter spends all her money buying brand name clothing(名牌衣服).She even complains to me that she does not have enough pocket money(零用錢)—it makes me furious(憤怒)!Who does she think she is?
Question:What is this parent's opinion of his or hers daughter's desire in buying brand name clothing?
同樣地,第一步,這問題的主題是「parent's opinion of his or her daughter's desire in buying brand name clothing」。
第二步,有關家長講述女兒買名牌的keywords和phrases包括:
「all her money」(用「all」代表女兒將「所有」錢花在買名牌衣服上)
「complains......does not have enough pocket money」(用「投訴零用錢不夠」代表女兒嫌家長給的錢不夠,想再要多些錢買名牌衣服。)
「it makes me furious!」(家長對女兒的投訴感到憤怒,覺得女兒的投訴不對。)
「who does she think she is?」(「她以為自己是誰?」反映家長覺得authority(權威)被挑戰,除生氣外,更覺得女兒應該感恩和遵從父母。)
第三步,經過推論,指出那個家長認為女兒花太多錢買名牌衣服並覺得女兒投訴自己給太少零用錢是不對的。家長為此而感到氣憤,認為女兒應該懂得感恩和遵從父母。同學回答時可這樣寫:
The parent reckons that his or her daughter spends too much money on buying brand name clothing and he or she thinks that his or her daughter should not complain about having not enough pocket money. The parent is furious about his or her daughter's behaviour and thinks that he or she should learn to be grateful and obey his or her parent.
此外,能一眼認清作者的態度是正面(positive),負面(negative)還是中立(netural)亦能幫到同學作答inference questions。不過,這種inference questions除問作者的態度外,亦可問感覺。而當問及感覺時,同學們宜多知道些有關「感覺」的形容詞,因而可選得正確答案。
