Civil servants should respect mechanism on pay rise

The 2015 Pay Trend Survey was released May 19. It suggested that upper, middle and lower salary-band civil servants should be subject to a pay rise of 3.42%, 4.12% and 3.02% based on their respective pay trend indicators. Some civil servant groups expressed disappointment as these hikes cannot keep up with inflation. Pay adjustment has always been an issue that easily causes controversy. The rocketing inflation in Hong Kong is a general phenomenon brought about by quantitative easing policies adopted around the world, and the general public now suffers from greater livelihood burdens.

Most sectors in Hong Kong score an average salary rise of only between 3% and 4%, falling far short of the 6% inflation rate. It is impossible to keep them in line, a fact to be faced not only by the civil service, but all employees alike. Civil servant groups may have their opinions on the extent of pay rise, but they had better stick to the established mechanism lest it should cause even greater controversy.¡]20-5-2015¡^
