■「開綠燈」的英文是give the green light to，動詞寫作green-light。 資料圖片近日留意時事新聞，經常聽到「綠燈」、「開綠燈」的說法。大家都知道這個比喻來自交通燈。綠燈是示意車輛可以前行的燈號，開綠燈表示批准可以前進，比喻同意開行，可以進行某些事的意思。英文有一個常用短語，give the green light（給予綠燈），亦就是這個意思。
這是很常用的短語，不是只用於政治，在日常生活中也不時見到。當中的green light相當於consent（同意、批准），有時也會用go-ahead（前行）代替，give the go-ahead亦即是「給予許可，去吧」的意思。
The committee has already given the go-ahead for the team to do the research.
委員會已經給予許可，讓小組可以進行研究。
Give the green light 批准通行
同樣，說give somebody/something the green light 是許可或批准某個人或某件事，亦可寫作give the green light to somebody/something，即是批准某人進行一些行動或計劃，或者同意某些事情發生。
The students would like to organize a fun day and the principal gave them the green light.
學生想舉辦一個遊戲日，校長給他們開了綠燈，批准他們進行。
The government has given the green light to the new rail system.
政府已經給予新的鐵路系統綠燈，批准新系統上馬。
The re-development project has already been given the green light.
重建計劃已經獲發綠燈，得到批准。
Green-light作動詞 Red light少見
此外，green-light亦可作動詞使用，意思當然也是批准某些計劃開行，過去式及過去分詞可以是green-lighted 或 green-lit。
The council has green-lighted the fund-raising marathon and preparation work will start soon.
理事會已開綠燈准予進行籌款馬拉松，籌備工作快會展開。
The production of this TV program will not be green-lit unless there are enough sponsors.
除非找到足夠的贊助商，否則這個電視節目的製作不會獲發綠燈，得到批准。
交通燈雖然有綠燈，但也有紅燈。紅燈red light是叫停的燈號，即是不可以再前進。英文中亦有以紅燈比喻作不獲准許，不過比較少用，可能因為紅燈有比較多的象徵意義吧。
