■「咬到塵土」特別指陣亡的人。 資料圖片打掃家居，才發覺家裡很多雜物，都不是必要的物品，放在一角，鋪滿了塵。塵封了，可想而知，就是閒放一旁，很久沒有用。英文說某些東西gather / collect dust（積了塵），意思亦一樣，是指這些東西已經閒置了，長時間沒有用過。
His violin is collecting dust on the shelf. He has not played it for a long time.
他的小提琴擱在架上封塵，他很久沒有拿來彈了。
The old toys are lying around gathering dust. You can donate them to some children's homes.

物件塵封了，束之高閣，放着不用，但是還未至於化為塵土。空氣中的塵埃，其實都是粉塵污垢，極其緲小。可以想像，如果說一些東西turn to dust（化作微塵），那就是指這些東西已成塵土，微不足道，沒有價值，沒有用處。如果turn something to dust（令一些東西灰飛煙滅），即是把這些東西變得一文不值，或是徹底摧毀了。

此外亦有bite the dust的說法。字面意義是咬下沙塵，實際是說人重重倒下，身體重擊在地上，甚至嘴巴咬到了塵土。

馬場發生了意外，一名騎師從馬匹上墮下，重重撞到地上。
除了真的咬到塵土，亦寓意倒斃和死亡，特別是指在戰爭中陣亡。

引申開來，一個事件或一項事業失敗、不能運作，亦可以用bite the dust形容，即是以失敗告終，徹底完蛋了。
