After Economic Reform and the Opening Up Policy were implemented in the late 1970s, China shifted from a planned economy to market driven one. Restrictions were lifted on the supply of everyday goods, and ration coupons and ration books were gradually abolished.
In 1993 control over food prices was lifted in Beijing, retiring food coupons from the arena of history. This photograph shows a food shop worker in the Chaoyang District writing off the last batch of food ration coupons. ■資料:香港歷史博物館、新華社
