ENG 在練習或正式考DSE卷一閱讀時，考生通常怕遇到不熟悉的字（unfamiliar words），以為這會令他們必定失分。事實上，連一個考獲5**的同學未必明白Reading Comprehension中每一個字。那他們靠的是甚麼技巧？即老師常說的「guessing the meaning of words」，「靠估」是也。此「估」，不是天馬行空地估，而是從前文後理去猜想文中的那些「深字」之意。我知道不少同學做閱讀練習時有查字典的習慣，希望明白內文，因而容易作答。但這卻浪費了「guessing the meaning words」的大好機會。故每當學生做閱讀練習時，我必定叮囑他們不要用字典。雖然分數一定不會比查過字典後做那麼優秀，但那卻是「真成績」。
睇前睇後 注意文法
考獲5**的學生懂得憑借前文後理（context）、文法（grammar）、自己的邏輯（logic）和common sense去估unfamiliar words。當他們遇到不明白的字，第一時間就會「睇前睇後」來找到其意思。
這類題通常以問題：「What does the word“X”mean？」方式出現。答的時候應注意grammar，可這樣回答，「The word “X”means......」如這樣一條題目：「What does the word “Slaughtering”mean？」你應答：「The word“Slaughtering”means......」若你不知道「Slaughtering」，就如我所說看看此字的前後有沒有hints。而內文是：「Slaughtering is extremely unpleasant. There is nothing humane about the way in which we kill harmless animals.」在這一句，你會知道：
1. Slaughtering is extremely unpleasant.（極度不好）
2. …nothing humane…（不人道）
3. …kill harmless animals.（殺害無害的動物）
「kill」是最重要的字眼，你可以據此解答這問題：「The word “Slaughtering” means killing harmless animals.」注意，同學要將「kill」轉成gerund，「killing」才算文法上正確。故除要答對問題外，同學不要忘記grammatically correct。
借關係句式 解題無難度
先看以下例子：「Hybridisation, which is the process of combing different varieties of organisms to create a hybrid, is not new to biologists.」
Q1. What does the word “Hybridisation”mean？
同學們可能不懂「Hybridisation」，但若你懂得英文文法中的relative clauses，便知道文中作者用relative clause去解釋「Hybridisation」。故這問題對懂得用基本文法來協助自己作答的同學來說，簡直毫無難度。The answer is：「The word “Hybridisation”means the process of combing different varieties of organisms of create a hybrid.」
排除選項 確認答案
再看多一例：「Things get worse when the animals are transported to market. Almost 9% of them die in transit, often crushed and trampled, or suffocated by the lack of air and the terrible heat.」
Q2. What does the word“suffocated”mean？
A. badly hit
B. badly burnt
C. prevented from breathing
D. infected with virus
若運用邏輯和common sense去作答的話，同學可從文中知道：
1. Things get worse when the animals are transported to the market（事情會變差當動物被運往街市）
2. Almost 9% of them die in transit（大概有9％的動物在運送期間死亡）
3. by the lack of air and the terrible heat（由於缺乏空氣和太熱）
雖然有9％動物在運送途中死亡，但文中沒提過他們被虐打（badly hit），或被嚴重燒傷（badly burnt），亦絕非死於病毒（virus），所以答案A、B和D都不正確。再看答案C，「prevented from breathing」（妨礙呼吸），正正和文中「lack of air and terrible heat」吻合。故此可以確定C是正確答案。同學們除要懂得omit一些「不可能是對」的答案之餘，不要忘記去確認所揀選的答案是否正確。 ■馬漪楠 培正中學英文科副主任
