——英文作文奪5**秘笈二之二
上期筆者分享應考DSE英文寫作卷的得分策略。這次筆者將教同學們怎樣增值作文。寫議論文時，大部分同學有相似的論點。所以閱卷員要分出哪些是佳作，就要看其文法（grammar）是否正確及所用的詞彙（vocabulary）和句式（language pattens）是否夠多。有同學問筆者：「我寫得很流暢，為甚麼不能取高分呢？」其實，行文流暢只是基本功。同學們必須出奇制勝，show off自己的英文水平，才有機會取得level 5以上的成績。
英文idioms 簡潔表深意
其中一個show off英文水平的方法就是用idioms。好處是有說服力且言簡意賅，不會寫得太clumsy。可惜，本港學生對idioms的認識近乎於零。不少小學或初中不會教英文idioms。其實idioms對外國人來說簡直是part of their life，正如我們小時候背四字成語一樣，用簡潔的詞語去表達深層的意思。
現在就讓筆者介紹一些較常用的idioms。知道「It's all plain sailing」是甚麼意思？原來是「一帆風順」。「It's all plain sailing」並不是用來祝福別人的旅程愉快安全，更可解作「進行得順利」。例如：「They have started to implement their project and it's all plain sailing.」（他們已開始實行他們的項目，而且進行得很順利。）
當你想用「cancel」（取消）一字，不妨轉用「annul」。兩字均解作「取消」而「all annulled」更有「一筆勾銷」之意。例如：「The party is all annulled」（派對被取消了。）
「At one's wits' end」
一籌莫展/江郎才盡
當我們說「一竅不通」時，可用「all Greek to somebody」。例如：「Diving is all Greek to me.」（我對潛水一竅不通。）「At one's wits' end」又指甚麼呢？原來是「一籌莫展/江郎才盡」。因為「wits' end」是「才智」用到「最盡」。In other words，就是「江郎才盡」。例如：「John is at his wit's end when Mary ask him to solve this problem.」（當Mary問John怎樣去解決這個問題時，John一籌莫展。）用這個詞比用「don't know how to solve the problem」更形象吧。
而「a slap on the wrist」是常用的idiom。例如：「The government's new ordinance is just a slap on the wrist.」（政府的新法例只是很輕的懲罰。）當然了，「輕打手腕」（a slap on the wrist）有誰會怕呢？
英文有沒有「力不從心」這個講法呢？有！就是「The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak」。例如：「Sarah worked very hard for the examination but failed; her spirit is willing but her flesh is weak.」（Sarah對這次考試力不從心，即使努力複習也不及格。）
同學若想講「見仁見智」，英文可用「a matter of opinion」。例如：「whether the plan will be feasible or not is a matter of opinion.」（計劃可行如否則見仁見智了。）這比「Different people have different opinions about this plan」好得多吧。有聽過「weather the storm」嗎？「weather the storm」的意思是「化險為夷/安然度過」。「weather」其實除了解「天氣」（as a noun）外，更可解作「渡過」（as a verb）。所以「weather the storm」就是渡過一場風暴/危機的意思。例如：「The company got a loan from the back to weather the storm.」（那公司向銀行取得借貸去渡過危機。）
最後，若有人說「You are flawless!」，即意為「You are perfect!」（你真完美無瑕！）。所以「Without a flaw」就有完美無瑕/天衣無縫的意思。例如：「Nothing is without a flow」就解作「沒有事是天衣無縫」的意思。 ■馬漪楠 培正中學英文科副主任
