① Capital city in Tang Dynasty. It is now called Xi'an.
② In ancient times, people washed clothes by pounding them with a wood club in water.
③ Border pass in ancient northwestern China, also known as Jade Pass or Yu Men Guan in Dunhuang County, Gansu Province.
④ Also known as Xiongnu. These were barbarians who made raids on Chinese towns from time to time along the northeast border in ancient times.
