因為新冠肺炎疫情嚴峻，以及全球社會各種因素，2020可算是水深火熱的一年，大家都度過了危難的日子。「水深火熱」形容情況惡劣艱難，英文亦有類似說法，用火和水比喻困難和險境。
經歷重重困難、險境，可以說go through fire and water歷遍火和水，意思是事情有難度，要達到目的或取得成效，須面對多種挑戰和跨越各樣難關。上古至中世紀時期，歐洲判決犯人時沒有法庭審議程序，只靠神明裁決，最常用的試驗是火和水，犯人手拿燒熱了的鐵行走，又或被拋入水中，燒傷痊癒的或沉到水中的就判為無罪。現在go through fire and water比喻經歷重重險阻。
Because of the pandemic, we have to go through fire and water to travel abroad.
由於全球疫情，我們前往外國要經歷重重難關。

這間公司跨過了重重難關挑戰，才成為業內第一。
如果說go through fire and water for someone或只是go through fire for someone，就是為某人犧牲，赴湯蹈火，歷盡艱辛。

他在國內備受尊崇，因為他曾經為國民赴湯蹈火，歷盡艱辛。
They are willing to go through fire for their only son.
他們願意為獨生子犧牲，赴湯蹈火。
火象徵了險境，水亦相似，代表困境與麻煩，be in / get into deep water墜入深水中，即是墜入深淵，陷入困局，景況艱難，問題嚴重，甚至去到不能解決的地步。
The company is in deep water during this time of recession. It is deep in debt and probably not able to pay the bank.
在這個衰退時期，那間公司墜入深淵，負債纍纍，可能無法償付銀行欠款。
He is in deep water with his work. There is no way that he can finish the project in time.
他的工作陷於困局，不大可能及時完成項目。

倘若病毒繼續傳播，政府將陷入很大困境。
情況水深火熱，要赴湯蹈火，才可以跨越難關，就必須下定決心。要顯示決心，可以用come hell or high water（哪怕烈火洪水）。這短語不是動詞，只是加在句子中的附加語，加重語氣，表示決心。據估計當中的hell是hellfire地獄之火，而high water是flood洪水，come hell or high water哪管來的是烈火洪水，像中文的刀山火海，即是無論如何，無論遇到什麼困難險阻，不管未來發生什麼樣的事情，也會把事情完成、做好。
I will have the project finished on time, come hell or high water.
無論如何，不管怎樣，我也會把項目準時完成。
The organizers have announced, come hell or high water, the show will go on.
主辦當局已經宣布，即使困難重重，不管發生什麼，節目會如常演出。

這一句無論如何 come hell or high water，說起來容易，但絕不容易做到，水深火熱的時候，要有go through fire and water赴湯蹈火的勇氣，下定決心渡過難關，不怕險阻。
